What Goes Most With Your Toast: Celebrating Tasty Jams -- Vol. 1 -- "Goliath"

Vol. 1

“Goliath”

Remember when the science went too far?

Forget about the silent screams that come from your guitar

My name’s Goliath and I lost the war

‘Cause I forgot exactly what that I was fighting for

I speak in tongues like all good sailors do

Don’t try to run from the jailors that are holding you

I’m not a fan of guns, but I must admit I own a few

When the day is done I like to open fire on the moon

I made my living off of broken bones

I tore the city down with microphones

They can’t forgive, despite regret I show

It’s hard to blame them with the things I’ve done

It took a year for me to get it right

I still remember when I lost my sight

I wander aimlessly and all alone

I doubt I’ll ever get to go back home

I struggled with the facts they gave to me

I hammered nails into the veins of my hypocrisy

It took a single stone to set you free

You came and took my throne and left me lying there to bleed

“Goliath” was written late in 2014, shortly after Max Gilbraith and Gordon Lindley joined up with the band on bass and drums, respectively, and was the first IPJ song written by and for the full electric lineup. Up to that point, all of the band’s originals had been conceived by JD Rodgers, with minor contributions here and there from each of the other members. Bolstered by a powerful and ambitious new rhythm section, the group sought to develop a more communal songwriting style, and over the course of a week or so, a single innocent-sounding guitar lick blossomed into the sprawling epic that would eventually become the closing track on the band’s debut EP. To this day “Goliath” remains a relative rarity on IPJ’s setlists, but when it does appear, it usually opens or closes a set, and often the show.
